In four movements, it portrays the history around the statue, which was built to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ehonor Helios, one of the Greek Gods. The Colossus of Rhodes was constructed to celebrate the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003esuccessful defense of Rhodes city against an attack by Demetrius I of Macedon; the king of Asia. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn 305 BC, the island of Rhodes was a major player in international trade; controlling the entrance \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eto the Aegean Sea. They maintained treaties of neutrality with many empires but had a close \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003erelationship with Ptolemy I; the king\/pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt. Demetrius I became concerned \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethat Rhodes would supply Ptolemy I with ships. Also seeing the island of Rhodes as an ideal place \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eto set up a base of operations, he decided to attack the city in an attempt to conquer it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\"\u003eDemetrius brought an army of roughly 40,000 men to attack the city. Though the island of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRhodes was heavily fortified, their forces numbered only about 6,000. The siege, lasting over a \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eyear, ultimately proved unsuccessful. Astonishingly, the Rhodians emerged victorious. This piece, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethe first movement of the larger work, depicts the battle which took place on the island. The \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emusic depicts the intensity, brutality, and violence of the battle.
